I left on a JET plane

I left on a Jet Plane on Monday and came back home to TWO boys that missed their mommy VERY much!
I equally missed them too!

I came home to Crew bottle free!
we celebrated yesterday with chocolate cake
thanks meme and daddy for doing this for me!

He is doing okay without a bottle and isn't drinking near as much milk as he was, but eating better.  It was his last baby thing... sad mommy face :(
He has an ear infection right now so he is a little fussy and only wants his mommy.  Which made it hard to leave him today at school.  I am looking forward to the weekend playing and loving on my boys!
Have the best day and weekend!  I am off to go interview people for a job in my office...wish me luck!

Also did you notice new pictures of me with my boys...
look at that adorable header picture and slideshow...
thanks to both of my sisters for the amazing new pictures!

a day in the life Working Mommy Post - Meet Morgan

HAPPY FRIDAY~
I am so happy it is Friday!  It has been a long week of travel and time away from the boys!  I am ready for 2 FULL days of playing and snuggling with my babies!

Meet Morgan!  Thanks Morgan for sharing your day with us!  Go show her some love she just started blogging!

Hi! I'm Morgan.  I just recently started blogging at A Day with the Preston's. I'm wife of 8 years to Clay and mom to Brooklyn (4) and Cutter (2).  I have worked full time at a small school district since before my daughter was born.  I work in the finance office, which means that I work all year long.  I am lucky enough to be off on all school holidays and on fridays during the summer.  I have also recently became a rep for KellysKids clothing and am loving that too.  www.kellyskids.com/morganpreston

Our basic day:

5:45 am: I am up and in the shower so that I can be completely ready before the kids gets up.  If I am lucky, I can manage to get a pot of coffee made but that's about it.

6:45-7:00 am: I am starting to get the kids up and dressed for the day. Teeth brushed, dressed, and hair combed is about all we have time for.

7:15-7:25 am: We are out the door and headed to the babysitter's house.  We are so fortunate to have an amazing lady that keeps the kids in her home.  She lives about 4 miles straight down the road from us.  The commute is amazing. She really is amazing and the kids absolutely love her.

7:30: I drop the kids off and head to the school.  Thankfully that is only another 3-4 miles away.  We live in a very small rural community so it doesn't take long to get anywhere.

3:30-4:00: Depending on the day I am off work around this time and headed to get the kids.  I love that I get to leave work so early and spend some of the afternoon with the kids everyday.

Brooklyn has dance class on Tuesdays in a town about 8 miles away and Wednesdays we have church.  Otherwise we are usually home in the evenings.  Since we live out in the country 8 miles from town, I cook the majority of the time.  We don't have a set time for supper.  It varies anywhere from 6:00 - 6:45 pm.  About 7:00 pm our routine kicks in again.  We do baths, play for a little bit, maybe a movie or cartoon, and then it is bedtime by 8:30 pm.  My kids are amazing at a lot of things, but we were not blessed with good sleepers. One or both kids typically end up in bed with us during the night so Clay and I try to be in bed between 9:30-10:00 pm so that we can get a few good hours of sleep before our visitors arrive.

Quality Time:

Getting in alone time with each person in the family can be tricky at times.  We are so lucky and blessed to live close to both our parents.  That usually means the kids have somewhere to go play or spend the night when Clay and I need a night out.  Sometimes we just enjoy having an hour or two to relax at home while the kids go to the park or out to supper with the grandparents.  Brooklyn is getting to the age that she sometimes asks to go hang out with both grandparents so that is fun for everyone involved. :)

I usually get my time with Brooklyn on Tuesdays.  Cutter typically stays with Clay while I take Brooklyn in to town to dance.  She is absolutely in love with dance so it is so fun to watch her learn and dance.  She is so funny right now and I love hearing her stories on the way to and from since we have about 30 minutes in the car.  She has also discovered the world of cheerleading.  She thinks it is fun to go to the football games at the school I work at.  I have taken her to a couple of those so that she can watch the high school girls cheer.
Getting time alone with my little guy is a little tougher.  He is all boy and constantly on the move so it is incredibly difficult and exhausting to try to keep up with him.  We usually get to play on Wednesdays while Brooklyn is at church.  Our church is very small and we don't really have anywhere for 2 years old to be on Wednesday nights.  So, that is mom/dad/Cutter time.  I try to do lots of boy things with Cutter.  We go outside a lot, ride the four wheeler, play with toy tractors.  Basically, all of Cutter's favorite things.  We tried a football game with Cutter but he had a little too much fun and just wanted to dig in the dirt under the bleachers.  It wasn't easy to try and keep up with him and I really couldn't tell you a single thing that happened that game. haha

Flying kites one afternoon

Clay and the kids building a rocket.

There is nothing fancy about our life and I feel like we are always busy, but I wouldn't trade a second of it for anything in the world.  We love the country, being so close to family, and each other.  I know these days are passing too quickly so we are just trying to enjoy each day.

a day in the life Working Mommy - meet Brooke

Happy Wednesday!

Thanks Brooke for sharing your day with us!

Hi! My name is Brooke.  I am wife to Joe and mommy to Makayla (2 1/2) and we have one fur baby named Tika. I work full time as an outsourcing coordinator at a local accounting firm. I typically work 8 am until 5 pm three days a week and until 3pm two days a week.  I also run my etsy shop www.sewblessedbaby.etsy.com in my “free” time.  I have recently been working hard to build up inventory for the holiday season. This part of my “work” is really a time to zone out and relax and I love being able to do it and have a husband that fully supports that!  Joe works full time as well as a financial planner and leads a small group of middle school boys at our church.

The Day to Day:

A typical day in our house starts with me getting up at 5:30.  I usually get showered and ready for the day by 6:15 and head downstairs to pack lunches, make coffee and have breakfast.  Joe will usually gets up between 6 and 6:30.  He will help me get Makayla ready if I am taking her to daycare however, most days he takes her.  His morning schedule a little more relaxed compared to mine.  If I take her to “school”  we try to leave the house by 7 if not a little earlier.  We live a distance away from our offices and traffic can sometimes be a bear.  I have found on days I drop her off that taking something to go for breakfast works well.  Makayla is just a slow eater sometimes and this helps the morning to move a little more smoothly.  I drop her off at school and arrive at work about 8 am.  I usually pick her up in the afternoon and we start our trek home, arriving between 6 and 6:30 most nights.  I try to have easier meals to prepare for my longer days and cook something a little more “fancy” on my early days.  We buy all our meat in bulk and I divide it out into meal portions before freezing in food saver bags.  This helps with meal prep tremendously not to mention the grocery budget! We usually keep are nice assortment of fresh veggies so that any meal can easily be thrown together.  I used to meal plan and really need to get back into it!!  Anyone have any great meals?  I got burnt out on our routine meals.

I try to do something every night to keep the house “in order”, whether it be doing a load of laundry, doing the floors, cleaning the kitchen, etc.  We try to pick up toys every night before bed.  I find I am more relaxed when sitting down for the night if the room I am in is somewhat picked up. :)  We do most heavy cleaning on the weekends, Joe is a huge help with this.   We also do yard work on the weekends.  We started a garden this summer and just recently replanted for fall.  Hoping to get lots of greens and beets!

Quality Time:

With Makayla quality time is usually spent according to her needs.  Sometimes she just wants someone in the room with her while she plays independently.  Other times she wants to be very interactive.  We adjust accordingly.  Activities with her include reading many books(this girly loves some books), going to the library, playing with her kitchen and having a pretend picnics, singing songs together, and playing outside (especially with sidewalk chalk).

With Joe we have most of our quality time in the evenings once Makayla is down for the night.  We love to have stay home dates and enjoy a wine and cheese spread.  Some nights we play cards, watch a movie, sometimes we have deep discussions, or even just watch a couple shows that we enjoy together.

We just purchased our first house under a year ago and have been busy with making it our own.  We have very different schedules than most of our friends, and live a distance away from many of our friends.  This makes time with them a bit more challenging.  We are currently looking for a small group to join with our church.  We LOVE our neighbors and really enjoy hanging with them as well.

Hope you enjoyed reading about our little family.  Visit us over at www.jandbfriend.blogspot.com for more of our busy life!

a day in the life Working Mommy Post - Jayme

Happy Friday All!

Meet Jayme - she has one boy and is due with her second baby boy next month... two boys fun...
thanks Jayme for sharing your day with us!

Hi!  I'm Jayme and I blog at No Regrets Living .  I'm the wife to Jeff, mom to Phinehas (17 months) and Stephen (due next month)!
When my first son was born, my husband and I had the whole "Should I stay at home or continue working outside the home?" conversation.  A big part of me wanted to stay home. (Still is, truth be told.)  I thought I'd always stay home when we had children.  But now that the moment was here, neither of us were so sure that it was right for our family at that time.  Instead of deciding to stop working completely, I pitched an idea to my company that I would reduce my hours to part-time.  They were agreeable, so that's what we did.  (For other moms that want to try this, I highly recommend it!  Your financial situation might not allow you to quit completely or your husband might be uncomfortable with the idea or you might think that your company would say no, but it's always worth a try!)  As long as I have a choice, I don't ever want to work full-time again!  Not even in 30 years when all my kids are grown and gone.
So far, it's working out very well.  My schedule is such that I work in the mornings, except for Tuesdays when I work a full day.  I know that I am beyond blessed to be able to do this.
Because of my schedule, I recognize that I don't have the same restrictions and pain points that full-time working moms do, but these are the things that have worked for us.

Our basic day:
6:00 AM - My son wakes up.  Yes, this is pretty early compared to other families, but I love it.  It gives me time with him in the morning for both of us to get ready and not feel rushed.  We have time to cuddle (if he's agreeable!), we have time to read books, we have time to eat breakfast together.
7:30 AM - We leave the house for the babysitters (who happens to be my sister, who is a stay-at-home mom to her 3 little ones - 1 of which is in school full-time).
8:00 AM - I'm usually at work by then, or shortly after.  My motto: get in, get my stuff done and get home!
12:30 PM – I pick him up from my sister's.
1:00 PM - We're back home and he's usually ready for his afternoon nap, which lasts about 90 minutes these days.  Sometimes, he isn't quite ready for a nap (depending on if he napped in the morning), so we might play, read books, explore the backyard (he loves being outside!) or do chores.  This is the time where I do laundry or unload the dishwasher or get something going for dinner.
3:00 PM - My husband gets home from work.  My husband has shifted his "typically a 9-to-5" job to be a "7-to-2" job, so that he can be home earlier (and spend less time in traffic, which is also great for his frustration level).

5:00 PM - We eat dinner. My husband usually takes point in watching our son while I finish dinner.  They usually hover around in the kitchen though, so we use this time to talk about our days and just be together.
6:30 PM - Wheel of Fortune!  It's become part of our family schedule to watch Wheel of Fortune together.  My son doesn't really watch with us, but he's down in our basement family room with us.  Usually he's playing with something else, but sometimes, he cuddles up and watches with us.  We usually change him into his pajamas during this time and give him a sippy cup of milk.
7:00 PM - Bedtime for my son.  (Seems early, but remember what time he gets up!)
Evening - My husband and I spend time together or are available to do things independently.  Sometimes, we'll watch a TV show together via Netflix or play a board game.  Sometimes, we do our own thing.  It just depends on what is going on or what we’re in the mood for.  Usually, we're in bed by 9:30 p.m. - 10:00 at the latest.
How I spend quality time with my son:
I'm a proponent of the fact that "quality time" happens most easily when there's also "quantity time" together.  Sure, there are great quality moments that you plan for intentionally - vacations or a trip to the zoo or a baseball game.  But I think that quality moments happen much more easily and frequently when there is lots of time together.
·         Quality time happens when I eat breakfast with him, teaching him not to throw his food or tip his plate or how to use a cup.  It happens when I cheer him on for mastering the use of a spoon.  It happens when I give permission to climb up on a chair, but not onto the table.
·         Quality time happens when he sits on the bathroom floor while I curl my hair in the morning.  He's at the age where the hair dryer is exciting to him!  Or when I brush his teeth after he sees me brush mine.  He's free to be in another room, but, at least for now, he seems to stick by me.
·         Quality time happens when I show him how to pick up the walnuts in the backyard and put them into the trashcan.
·         Quality time happens when I give him a duster and he 'helps' me dust the furniture.
·         Quality time happens when he 'helps' me make my bed in the morning.  He doesn't do anything more than mimic my pillow fluffing, but we have a good time rolling across the bed when we're done.  And I hope that I'm modeling a routine responsibility.
With that belief, I've done as much as I can to give us plenty of time together.
·         That's the main reason that I wanted to work only part-time instead of full-time. To maximize our time together while still holding down an income.
·         I haven't tried to "shift" my son's night sleep to a later bed time and thus, wake time (despite my desires to sleep in a little longer on the weekends)!  I love the fact that I don't have to wake him up; he can wake up on his own.  If his little body needs to sleep more (rare, it seems!), he can and we still aren't rushed to get out the door.
·         I shower at night after my son is in bed.  I don't mind going to bed with wet hair sometimes!
How I get household tasks done:
To be honest, this isn't a big burden on me.  It's probably a combination of having a smaller house (though we're about to move to a bigger one), only one child (though we're about to have two), and only working part-time.  But it's also because of other reasons:
·         I do chores with him.  I don't mind my son being around while I unload the dishwasher or fold a load of laundry or clean a bathroom.  It's part of his learning process and he hasn't yet figured out that it isn't fun.  Some of it I get done during nap time, some of it gets done with him "underfoot".  Painting is about the only thing that I intentionally do when he’s asleep!  I haven’t yet figured out how to let him ‘help’ with creating a mess!
·         I automate every bill that I can. By setting up level payment plans for things like utilities and cell phones and using automatic payments from our checking account, going through the mail is a 2-minute/day process.  Tops.  We probably have 1-2 bills/month that I actually have to write a check for and even then, I sit down and push a payment from our bank account.
·         I have 2 laundry baskets in our bedroom: one for darks and one for whites.  We sort our clothes when we take them off.  When it comes time to do laundry, just toss the entire basket into the laundry.
·         Since there are just 2 big mouths and 1 little mouths in our house, meal prep is easy.  1 casserole (even a 9x9 pan) can get us 2-3 meals.  Same with a pot of taco soup or chili.  We have no objections to leftovers and as such, I only need to cook 2-3 times/week.  Many times, I'll make 2 casseroles at once and freeze one.  I usually have browned hamburger meat in the freezer ready to be made into tacos or spaghetti or pizza or veggie soup.  After I grocery shop, I usually prep all the fruits for the week, so that they're always ready to eat.  I am not a gourmet cook - simplicity is all we need.  If I can't put it together in about 15 minutes, it's probably not the meal for me - at least not one that I'll use on a regular basis.
How I spend time with friends:
This one is hard.  This is not a strength of mine.  We are in a community group through our church twice a month.  But the group is new and we’re just now starting to become friends.  I've also just started attending a Women's Bible Study last month and hope that becomes a good spiritual outlet for me.  After church on Sunday, we go out to lunch with a friend of ours that attends church with us.  He also comes over for dinner on Mondays for a couple of hours.  Beyond that, though, I don't spend much time with friends.  And I rarely spend time (except for that newly added Women’s Bible Study) with just women.  Sometimes, I wish it was different, but I'm in the phase of my life where I don't have tons of flexibility.  But I don't think that's because I work vs. stay-at-home, but mostly just the "mom of little ones" phase that I'm in.
How I spend time with my husband:
This one isn’t a big struggle.  He's fun!  Because our son goes to bed so early, we have at least a couple of hours together a night, if we want it.  There are a couple of TV shows that we watch together every week that just gets us laughing (Wipeout) or cheering (The Voice and Shark Tank).  We also go to bed at the same time (except for when we have a little itty bitty newborn).  That gives us that dedicated time to talk together and pray for each other.

That's my life and I love it!

sleeping update grayson

Hi All!  I thought that I would take a moment out of my crazy busy week and let you know that bed time is going better with Grayson...

He hasn't had a night terrors since last Friday... I am not sure what was causing them, but I stepped back and started the process of getting him comfortable and making him feel safe in his room.  Which means I am laying with him until he falls asleep.
Baby steps right...

I am okay with doing this for some time and than I am going to move to sitting outside his door and hopefully "fingers crossed" we will be back to him going to sleep on his own.

I keep telling myself that he will only be little for a short time and the next thing I will know he will have nothing to do with me being in his room etc...

I will tell you that we did do something special and fun to get Grayson to sleep in his room.  We took him to build a bear and let him create a bear and guess what they have at build a bear... SUPERHERO bears!
Grayson picked out the batman bear and I sat down with him and told him about the special powers batman has:
~ he only stays in Grayson's room
~ if Grayson doesn't sleep in his room with his batman bear he will fly away to his cousin Drew's house in South Dakota and sleep with him because Drew sleeps in his room
~Batman Bear protects Grayson when he is sleeping

I go one step further and make a point that Batman Bear disappears each day and flies back before bed time.  I move batman bear all over his room and sometimes I pretend to knock on the front door and batman is at the front door waiting for Grayson... the imagination of it all is working and has been SO FUN! (it is like elf on the shelf, but with batman)

I just love this age because if you make anything FUN, at least for my little guy, he lights up with excitement!

a day in the life - Working Mommy Post - Leah

Meet Leah she is my guest post today all the way from Australia!
I just loved reading her post and seeing her adorable family picture.  Have a great Wednesday!

Hi!  My name is Leah, I am a full time working mum to 4 great kids, 2 boys Jake 16 and Laine 12 and 2 girls Britt 14 and Fallon 10 and married to my high school sweet heart Tim!    Thanks to Melissa for this great opportunity to guest post on her blog, I have loved reading everyone’s stories!   My story is a little different to the others as I live in Australia!   We live in a small town of 2500 people right in the middle of New South Wales, about 700KM west of Sydney

My day starts at 6.25am, my alarm goes off and I usually turn the tv on to watch the 6.30 news.  Tim jumps in the shower and is at his office by 7am if he is in town, he works away most weeks up to 4 nights of the week.  I make the kids lunches and eat breakfast then shower.  I iron work/school uniforms if I haven’t done them the night before and start waking the kids at 7.30 for school.  If I have time I will hang out a load of washing that I have done overnight.  In Australia we use clothes lines outside to dry our clothes, most families have clothes dryers but the cost of electricity is so high here, rarely would anyone use their dryer for every wash!  I find in winter I use it more, it’s a lot easier!  Jake 16 is always the last to get out of bed, by the time he is up the other 3 have showered and had breakfast.  While they are doing this, I do my hair and make-up and dress, then try to tidy the kitchen and make beds.  I do Fallon’s hair, everyone is in their school uniforms and we are out the door at about 8.20am.   Jake and Britt are both in high school and school starts for them at 8.38am, Laine and Fallon attend a Catholic primary school and they start school at 9am.  I start work at 8.30am; luckily both their schools are only several blocks from my office so I am usually on time!
I work in Early Childhood, doing therapy sessions with children aged from birth – school age.  I have a half hour lunch break and finish at 4pm.  I am studying  a Diploma in Children’s Services  as well at the moment, it is very hard to find the time to fit it in, but hopefully I will be finished in 12 months . If Tim is in town for work, he will pick the kids up from school at 3.15pm when they finish, if he is away Jake and Britt will walk home and Laine and Fallon walk to my office and stay until I finish.
After work/school during winter we have lots of activities for the week, both the girls do dance lessons, Britt has art lessons and works 1 afternoon a week at her part time job. Fallon has netball training, Laine has tutoring 2 afternoons a week and football training and Jake has a part time job 3 afternoons a week.  In winter when netball and football is on we have to travel 320km return each Saturday as our town competes with other surrounding towns.  The towns are not big enough to have local competitions so we play other teams.  It is very tiring with all the travel, but we all love it and look forward to playing and watching!  It’s a great social outing!   In summer there is no football or netball so Laine and Fallon do swim training and races with our local swim club.
Our school year runs from the start of February and ends about the week before Christmas in December.  We have 4 terms of 10 weeks each then 2 weeks off in between each term throughout the school year.  Our seasons are opposite to USA, we have just come out of winter and started with spring this week.
Some afternoons are extremely busy, especially if I have meetings to attend for work, so I try to plan ahead for meals on those days.  I like to have dinner ready by around 6pm, the kids are starving by then and it’s easier to have an early meal.  After dinner we do homework, feed animals, showers and watch TV.  I clean up the kitchen and pick up around the house as well as usually do 2 loads of washing each night.
Sundays are sleep in days!  I am exhausted from work and travelling on a Saturday by this stage, but as it’s our only day at home we have to catch up on things around the house.   I try to change sheets on the beds, vacuum, mop floors, clean bathrooms etc while Tim will mow the lawn and tidy outside.
The boys love to ride their dirt bikes on weekends, so Tim will take them riding or in the summer we take our ski boat out and the kids enjoy wake boarding.    The kids often will have their friends over or hang out at their houses.

Tim and I don’t really get a lot of time alone together, when he is in town with work we try and go out for lunch once a month or so, usually we are just home with the kids doing things.  I also find it hard to catch up with friends  too, luckily our town is small and I see them at school activities/functions, sports and the supermarket!  We don’t really go out anywhere but occasionally we can get away for a concert or show in Sydney or out for dinner with friends.
As much I enjoy living where we do, it can be isolating.  We have to travel the 320km round trip to medical appointments and orthodontist appointments.  We have a doctor here and a small hospital, but most things we have to travel away for.  Fallon was born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and has Chrones disease so we travel to Sydney (1400km round trip) regularly for doctors  appointments and hospital admissions.  Both Tim and I were born here, we actually went to pre-school together at age 4, then went to different primary schools and the same high school.  Both our parents live here and both our sisters live here with their husbands and children.
I have been lucky enough to have travelled to the USA twice; the first time was in 1994 with Tim and in 2011 with Britt.   Jake has also travelled to China representing his school in 2011, such a great opportunity for him to participate in. Britt had the most amazing opportunity with her dance school to dance at Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood Boulevard.  She had several performances while we were there and the high light was dancing in the Main St parade at Disneyland with over 800 dance kids from all over the world!   We were there in July so it was hot and busy!  The day the kids danced there were over 400 000 people at Disneyland, it blew us away!  We loved the shopping too!  I could not believe how cheap the clothes and food was compared to what we pay here in Australia.  We came back with 18 pairs of new shoes…….and had to buy 3 more bags to bring our shopping back!  I can’t wait to come back and see America again!

I don’t have a blog but you can follow me on instagram , ragdollharper is my user name.  Thanks for reading a little about my life!

1st day 'new" school

our boys started their 1st day today at a new school!

I was nervous for them... especially Grayson because he doesn't do well with new places or new people.  He is my shy one...
Crew I knew would do just fine he is my child that is the life of a party.

Before leaving the house we did a little 1st day photo session... always GREAT fun...

They didn't get the concept of holding the sign and letting me see their eyes... it was fun and by the end I was a sweaty mess!

Glad I captured these moments that are not perfect but it displays who they are at this age!
Love these boys!

Daddy joined us at our first day of school to help with meeting the new teachers and classroom.

Crew instantly ran in and started playing.  He was completely fine and has the sweetest teachers Ms. Loretta and Ms. Shelly
He has already made friends with Ms Shelly.

one of the things I love about the new school is they send me pictures of the boys and let me know how they are doing...

Grayson was shy and nervous... I stayed and tried to make him comfortable and get to know his teachers and new friends.  I spoke with his teachers in detail and I know that Grayson is going to LOVE Ms. Emily and Ms. Lauren.  They seem like the PERFECT fit for our little handsome guy!
His teacher text me already and he is playing with the other friends in his class and having a great time.

Can't wait to see them at the end of the day and hear all about it!
